Food Lover’s Market, Zimbabwe

Food Lover’s Market by Sam Levy’s Village in Borrowdale is my go to place for breakfast.  I absolutely LOVE the place and I keep going back for more. The other day I had a day off and my Manager specifically told me to go and spoil myself because life is short.  After running a million errands I decided to pass through Food Lover’s Market.

Unfortunately I wasn’t in time for breakfast and had to settle for lunch.  This is something I had never done before so I was open to trying out something new.  The waiter was very friendly and he helped me make a decision on what to try out.  I had chicken schnitzel which came with chips, a salad and mushroom sauce.  I absolutely love mushroom sauce and this was exactly what I needed after a busy morning.

What I Love About Food Lover’s Market:

  1. The food!  My plate was very very well presented.  Just looking at it put a huge smile on my face.  The first bite of chicken left a warmness in my heart that spelled happiness.  The chicken was cooked to perfection and I promise you it was so big I didn’t even eat supper that day and chose to take a doggy bag with.  The salad was colourful and crunchy; and the mushroom sauce was well done.
  2. The ambiance.  I love the fact that you can choose to sit indoors or outdoors.  I love sitting outside because there’s natural light and this is perfect for Instagram photos.
  3. Payment methods.  You can use Ecocash, Swipe, Cash or United States Dollars at a rate I think is reasonable.  I spend about 30 bond for my meal and refreshments.
  4. Friendly staff who actually smile and make you feel welcome.  You don’t feel out of place at all.  Food Lover’s Market has this homey feel to it.
  5. Menu.  It caters to those working on a budget.  You can enjoy a decent hearty meal that won’t leave you with any sign of regret for spending money there.  They have great customer service; you’re sure to leave a tip.

Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery

Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery has been on my to-do-list for the longest time.  My friend and I decided to give it a try and see what the hype is all about.  Thanks to technology it’s easy to get in touch with them because they’re available on Facebook.  A few messages later they had replied and sent through the menu for both the meals and the bar.  I’m one of those people who like to know how much I’m going to be spending on an outing in advance so that there are no surprises when I arrive at my intended destination.

Food ♥♥♥

I like to order food that I rarely eat or I’m not very enthusiastic about preparing on my own.  I ordered Crumbed Bream Fillet served with chips, salad and homemade tartar sauce(20 bond).  The picture above is the image I had of my meal.  You can’t imagine my disappointment when my food was finally served.  The crumbed bream looked like a hake version “fresh” out of Fish Inn.  It was dry, the tartar sauce didn’t quite compliment the bream, the chips were flaccid, the salad was simply flopped in my plate and wasn’t crisp.  My food was dull and I didn’t enjoy it.  It took forever and a day to be served and definitely not worth my hard earned bond notes.  I genuinely felt cheated.

Shami: “I enjoyed every bite of my chicken, it was delicious.  I actually had to get a doggie bag because the half chicken was so big I couldn’t finish it in one sitting.  However, I still can’t believe that we waited one solid hour to get our food!  “

Service ♥♥

As first timers we chose a table with a lovely view right next to the water fountain.  We wanted to take everything in about Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery in.  We sat there for the next 20 minutes with no one in sight to assist us.  I had to get up and go and ask one of the waiters for service.  Only then did we find out that it was self service and we had been sitting at a reserved table.  Now imagine if I hadn’t asked???  I strongly believe that they need waiters at the entry points of the restaurant to direct customers to make the whole experience a whole lot smoother.

You know how your waiter comes through to check up on you and find out if you’re enjoying your meal?  Well, there’s no such service here.

Shami: “I’d suggest that they have some waiters go round and check on customers as they arrive  especially those seated at the reserved tables to make sure they have been assisted.  The tables don’t have a “Reserved” sign, just a board with a name.  We actually thought the name was for the waiter who was supposed to serve us!”

Atmosphere ♥♥♥♥

This is probably the reason why we spent the greater part of the afternoon here.  The restaurant has a relaxed feel to it and the well-kept garden contributes enormously to the mood.  Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery is also family friendly.  There’s a play area with swings where kids can go and enjoy some time out away from their parents.  There was a live band playing different beautiful tracks including a few pieces from the late Oliver Mtukudzi.  The ambiance was certainly top notch.

Location ♥♥♥♥

1 Hurworth Road, Highlands, Harare.  It’s easy to locate if whether you’re using Google Maps or simple directions from a friend.  If you’re coming from the direction of Harare Central Business District you have to make sure you slow down just before the destination as the restaurant name is written on the durawall and if you drive too fast you just might miss the turn.

What I loved about Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery

  • I was happy with the fact that they accept all forms of payment United States Dollars (if you’re free to dish out your foreign currency like that) as well and if you pay using this currency you get a huge discount.
  • There’s secure and more than enough parking available, you can enjoy your meal without having to worry about your car.
  • The most delicious cocktails ever!  Perhaps next time we will sit right by the bar and enjoy sips of fruity flavoured cocktails instead of the food?

Horsebox Bar MaKupsy.jpg

I completely forgot to ask if they had WiFi available for their customers.  If yes, we probably didn’t need it anyway, Shami and I were enjoying each other’s company.

On a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the most amazing experience I would rate Queen of Hearts Cafe & Bakery a 7 out of 10.  I believe they can do better when it comes to the food, I might go back and give them one more try.

Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House: Part 2

In my first Restaurant Review for Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House I promised I would go back for a second experience.  You can read all about my first experience from here.  I can safely tell you that going back was a great decision which was greatly influenced by my darling little sister Pineapple.  We catch up in person every now and again when we are both free and this time it was her turn to choose a place and we settled for Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House.  I have nothing but great things to say today so you might want to read through so that you get address to this place at the end of the blog.

I was the first one to arrive and I had to check and make sure they accepted payment through Ecocash.  Thankfully they do and so I happily waltzed in and chose a table for two.  When Pineapple arrived we chose a different table and we made ourselves at home.  We had a waiter come through to assist us, I can’t possibly forget her name, Samantha, she was very helpful.  Before placing any order of sort the first thing we did was ask her to take pictures, for the gram!

Pineapple & MaKupsy (Fitness Bae)

Browsing through the menu was an easy decision for me.  I don’t like beef so I was scouting for anything but that.  I settled for a chicken burger and chips and minutes later Pineapple decided on the same thing.  I guess we share the same birthday for a good reason after all.  I made sure I showed up on an empty stomach because the agenda of the day was talk about what we have been both up to, what we are planning for the near future and how we are going to to make a mark in the world while enjoying a good meal and indulging in some yummy beverages.

Chicken Burger & Chips $8

I think this is the biggest burger I have ever had in my life!  I had to cut it in half so that I could accommodate it in my mouth.  It was fresh, tasty and packed with nothing but goodness. You wouldn’t think it was your ordinary burger, it had “that thing”.  The burger was sinfully tasty just thinking about it right now is making me feel hungry all over again.  I am very particular about colour on my plate and I can safely say that I was not disappointed.   The meal was executed to a tee.  I didn’t get to finish my burger by the way.  Okay I lie, I left just a bite size but I really couldn’t stomach anymore food.  I didn’t even have space for dessert!

my favourite picture of the day 🙂

For people who were stuffed we surprisingly had space for cocktails.  We wanted to try something new and Samantha went and asked the Bar Man to come through and explain to us what each cocktail contained.  Like how cool is that?  This is already another reason Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House will be my new hang out place.  I haven’t had that kind of personalised service before.  We settled for Purple Rain cocktails.  Not only do they look pretty they taste completely divine!  My ears starting getting hot at some point, a good kind of hot.  I am not sure if it was me just feeling happy for spending time with Pineapple or the cocktail was taking over, either way it was a wonderful feeling!

Purple Rain $9 each

Zimbabwean Bloggers 🙂

We were at Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House till around 9pm.  To think we got there in the afternoon around 3pm!  I think my second experience was much better than the first because I had great company and a great waitress as well.  If Pineapple and I had it our way we could have stayed there till closing time but we had other commitments the next day.

I think it is only right for me to tell you that if you don’t pay a visit to Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House anytime soon you will be doing yourself a serious disservice!  It is going to be the hottest place in town and you don’t want to have to make advance bookings to have a taste of the place.  Go there today, tomorrow, this weekend but whatever you do make a trip there, it will be worth your while.

The positive things from my second experiences are:

  • The use of Ecocash, what a a life saver!
  • The waitress Samantha was very attentive and helpful.
  • The toilets were clean.
  • The ambiance was great.
  • The music had that Kizomba feel to it I had to stop myself from getting up and pulling a move or two.
  • Compliments to the Chef on this day, the food was amazeballs!

I noticed on their Facebook Page that they now have a Jazz Nite on Wednesdays.  I will check it out soon because I always have an excuse to leave the house!

One of the main highlights of Chop Chop Brazilian Restaurant is that unlike many sit-down non fast food restaurants in Zimbabwe, they are open every single day of the week for breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee and drinks. In addition, everyday, there is a different special on the menu; all you have to do is ask your waiter!

Don’t say you didn’t hear this from me first but… from Saturday the 21st of July, they will be serving a meat platter!  It will be going for $30 for 4 kebabs, 2 sausages, 4 wings, 250g sirloin steak and chips.  There goes watching my portions!

You can make a reservation online. No need to call or come in just visit

On a scale of 0-10, 10 being the best experience ever, I give Chop Chop Brazilian Restaurant a cool 9 out 10.  I am so glad I made a second visit, it was worth every minute.  If you want to have a sit down at a place with great energy, comfortable sitting area and delicious food then look no further…

Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House

We have long since agreed that I am a lover of fine things so it will come as no surprise that I already got to check out the new joint in town, Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House.  This was actually a surprise outing so I was not looking the part so there will be no filtered selfies in this post.  The plus side of this place is that it’s right in town and just a 5 minute walk from my place of residence.  I was excited to find out if they had better service than News Cafe Fife Avenue because this was going to determine if they will be my go to place when I am feeling lazy to cook.

I am one of those individuals who always asks the person waiting on me which dish I should try if I am at a new place.  I didn’t want to have chicken, I have eaten it in so many different forms it’s the last thing I want to eat when I go out.  She recommended I try out the Chop Chop Pizza.  In the interim I ordered a cappuccino and I was disappointed when it came through.  This cappuccino looked unhappy and malnourished; it didn’t even have a smiley face.  I have seen happier cappuccino’s in my life to be honest.  I am particular about the small details and this already got me less excited.

USD2 😦

I took it in slowly while I waited on the pizza which surprisingly didn’t take long.  I am sure the wait was just 5 minutes and it was ready.  My Blesser Lite ordered chicken and chips and it was then that I realised there was nothing green in both our plates.  When the waitress came we ordered a veggie mix and I felt so much relief because food doesn’t make sense for me if it isn’t colourful.

Behold the Chop Chop Pizza

Prices for image above:

Cappuccino : USD2

Mixed Veggies : USD3

Chop Chop Pizza : USD8

The presentation was alright but the truth is when I took my first bite of the pizza I was not wowed.  I always insist that if you eat out the experience must be a shock to the system.  I mean what’s the point if you pay for a meal that doesn’t impress you, might as well not go right?  I expected more from them, the way it had been hyped and the way I was excited each time I ran past the building watching renovations taking place during my morning jog… it was a real train smash.

We ordered dessert and I chose Apple Crumble because it tastes divine; they serve it with ice cream but I’m used to having it with custard but there is always room to try new things.  The apple crumble did not disappoint, I loved every bite of it!  I didn’t know how to combine it with the ice cream so I just had a spoonful here and there till I had finished it.

My Blesser Lite loves things and even though he insisted he was full after eating a whole half chicken and chips he ordered a chocolate cake which he didn’t finish because he complained that it was too rich.

I would have eaten the remaining cake myself if I still had space for it!  I was stuffed.  I only ate 2 slices of pizza, part of his chips and part of the salad and I was good.  I had to ask the waitress to pack away my food because I had plans for it for today.  I will probably have it for lunch.  I ordered a glass of hot water with lemon because I felt too full and needed something to make the bloated feeling go away.

The face you make when you are officially stuffed!

The few things I liked about the place were:

  • The waitress was helpful
  • The restaurant is clean
  • The dessert was alright
  • They have both a swipe and Ecocash facility

I did not like:

  • The food was bland, we may as well have gone to Pizza Slice and had a better meal
  • The ambiance was nothing to ride home about
  • I don’t recall any music being played
  • The experience was nothing out of the ordinary

I think the only thing that made the evening bearable was the fact that I had good company otherwise had I been on my own I would have not lasted 10 minutes in there.  On a scale of 0-10, 10 being completely satisfied with my experience I will give Chop Chop Brazilian Steak House a 4.  I would like to believe they are still new in town and probably after a few weeks in the business they will up their game.  I have faith in them because it would be nice to come back to something that will bedazzle me.

In my opinion Chop Chop is Pizza Slice that went to Private School.

Alo Alo Restaurant!

Alo Alo Restaurant was on my to-do-list for the longest time!  If you are a regular reader  you already know that I am a lover of all things divine.  From divine food, divine travel destinations, divine accessories, divine eye candy, okay fine divine everything because put simply I love nice things.  Sometime last year I got to try out Alo Alo Restaurant and this was my experience in a nutshell.  Today I have no plans of making you read a never ending review so I will keep this one short and sweet.

The restaurant has a beautiful setup and you can choose to sit inside or outside.  The decor is different, different in a good way though. We chose to sit outside, the garden is kept well and I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to take it all in.  Naturally, I took a dozen photos of the place and a few selfies and they all came out looking so posh.  (It must be my phone camera!) I also got to kick of my shoes, walk about and feel the cool plush lawn on my feet.  The waitress was quick to bring the menu and we went about deciding on what to have, but first I needed a drink!  However, she didn’t look too happy at first but she warmed up later on.  Given the heat that day I was happy to receive an ice cold Hunters Dry.  Unfortunately after the first round of drinks I had to go out looking for the waitress, points deducted already! d8ea7232-40b2-4d29-b1aa-f60e0a125d52.jpg

Be warned though the prices are pretty steep so it might be a place you want to go for a special occasion not some random lunch because your wallet will bleed. Expect to spend at least USD15 for a meal.  I don’t remember the name of the meal I chose you know how restaurants have all this fancy names for simple things that make you wonder…Put simply I ordered spaghetti, meat balls and a salad that was ohhh sooo crunchy!  I had initially ordered chips and pork chops but they were out of potatoes; like how?   I strongly feel that the waitress should forewarn you before placing an order what they do or do not have!

My food was well presented.  I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well cooked, served very hot and it was ready in reasonable time. For that they get their points back.  You know how you order something and you think yes, this is THE meal, well.  In as much as mine was delicious you should have seen the plate next to mine!  Now I know why they say relationships are like ordering food in a restaurant.  You choose what you really want and then you see what the next person is having and you have to have it!  Human beings can never be satisfied!

You can be the judge; which plate would you choose?  I obviously got a slice of that pork chop it was too tempting, I could not help myself.

The Aftermath 🙂

My experience at Alo Alo Restaurant was okay, to be honest there was nothing that really wowed me.  A few things that I liked would be:

  • The waitress regularly checked up on us.
  • The food was delicious.
  • They serve hearty portions.
  • The garden is beautiful.
  • It’s a beautiful place you can take your family.
  • The bathroom is clean, they have sweet smelling hand wash, lotion and flowery tissues.  Yes, it matters.
  • It’s the perfect place for selfies!

Have you been to Alo Alo Restaurant before?  If yes, what was your experience like?  I will rate them a cool 7/10.

Delicious Fine Food Emporium

“Try Delicious Fine Food Emporium.”

That’s the reply I got from a guy who said he would prefer to be named as “a handsome dimpled Ndebele guy”.  You can never go wrong when you ask your friends on social media for recommendations.

I hooked up with my partner in loving all things nice and headed out for breakfast on Sunday morning.

We were greeted by a bubbly young waiter who introduced himself as Melvin.  We opted for a table for two and got the cosy table by the corner right next to the mini balcony.  I asked him what he would recommend for breakfast, something filling though because we were dying from hunger.  He gave us options and we ordered some cappuccino while we waited for our food.  Someone has to tell me what they call the biscuit they put on the side of your cappuccino and why they only put an incy wincy size.  The way that biscuit goes down and sadly you have only one of it.  Let’s play nice guys, why not give us three of those yummy biscuits, yes, no, maybe, am I stretching my luck? LOL

I will tell you one of the few things I loved about this place, the cool breeze and fresh air.  Given the current heat wave sitting indoors was not ideal.  I also got to watch people taking leisurely walks on a Sunday morning and that kept me away from my phone for a while. (still trying to battle my phone addiction).  The other thing I was happy with was that the food didn’t take forever and a day to come through.

Breakfast Tramazzini USD11

That was my plate.  I LOVE COLOUR.  Just looking at this got my mouth watering it was unbelievable! Underneath the pancake was bacon, scrambled eggs, tomato and Parmesan shavings.  I have no idea what the last thing is but it tasted absolutely delicious!  The salad had a dash of dressing which I have to have!  My food was so juicy and tender I could feel nothing but pure bliss while I ate.  This is what breakfast should look like, I took a few tips from this and I will certainly be trying this at home.  The presentation definitely won be over as well.  I believe when you see food in a plate you should get excited about it and trust me I couldn’t wait to dig in!

Farmhouse Breakfast USD 11

This was my partner in loving nice things had. Two eggs, smokey bacon, pork sausage, grilled tomato, fried potato, banana and toast.  What a mouthful!  When I asked him about his meal he said and I quote” What I liked about the Deli is you feel at home…it’s like a home away from home.  It did not feel like a restaurant and I got to enjoy my meal in a relaxed environment.  The meal was delicious, food presentation was good and I ordered a filling meal that was worth every bite.”

During our meal I took a note of a few things that I wasn’t particularly happy with.  That ketchup bottle was close to finishing and I had a hard time squeezing it out.  I remember saying to myself I am going to splash some sauce on my white shorts and that nearly happened!  Boy was I going to be pissed off or what??!  I would like to believe that replacing a ketchup bottle with a new one is not too much work and I hope someone looks into this because it’s not a good look.

I had fallen in love with the white rose in a glass at first glance but when I realised it was those plastic flowers I was disappointed.  I think fresh flowers would certainly not break a budget.  Maybe buying those bunches that will bloom, those will certainly last long.  I am sure there are inexpensive flowers somewhere in town.  Fussy much?

Back to the fun stuff.  I cleared my plate, well, we both did even though half the time we were trying out things from the next persons plate.  I do that a lot when I eat out.  Make sure that I order something different from the next person so that we get to try out two different meals at once.  You should try this out and let me know how that goes for you.  There was just a fork and knife left in both our plates when Melvin came back to clear the table.

My experience here was great.  Melvin kept coming back to check on us to find out if everything was okay and if we needed anything else.  One of the few reasons I will be back for another visit is because the staff are friendly and cheerful  They give you a warm welcome and that’s definitely a plus for me.  I would certainly recommend this restaurant to friends and family.  On a scale of 0-10, 10 being completely satisfied with my experience I will give Delicious Fine Food Emporium a cool 8.  They should expect to see me again sometime soon because their lunch menu got me feeling very excited.

P.S The restaurant really needs to work on getting a Facebook, Twitter and Instagram page.  We are living in the age of technology, make it easy for us to find you.

Their address is: Shop 97A Sam Levy’s Village, Borrowdale, Harare

Chez Zandi – Bistro & Wine Bar

Chez Zandi is definitely my go to place come Friday!  Last week I hooked up with friends and we had what was supposed to be a drink or two turn into a whole night of good company, extra cold drinks, great music and delicious food. If you stay in The Avenues this might turn into your new hangout place to.  I would have you know that I pass by this place every other day when I go for my morning run but I never realised that it was the hottest place ever!

View above me

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the decorations, definitely a plus for me.  As you walk in there is a garden area and a few children were playing there.  It’s a family friendly environment and I will make sure I take my daughter there one of these afternoons, she would definitely love all that space to run around.

There is an option to sit inside or outside the restaurant but my friends were outside already so there was no way I was going to start to ask to change tables; besides it is blazing hot lately so even at night the temperatures are crazy. However, the benches are not exactly comfortable.  You know how a bench ordinarily has three planks that go across it, well, theirs have two and for some of us who are blessed in the curves department; it made sitting pretty uncomfortable.  Perhaps management can look into this.

One thing I liked about my experience was that the waiter actually remembered our drinks and didn’t have to keep asking what we were having.  It’s unfortunate that I have forgotten his name he really did a great job.

The music was laid back and diverse for the most part then it got all hyped by the hour.  I listened to songs I last heard when I was in High School and I loved it!

All this for USD8

I honestly don’t know why I choose to do these Restaurant Reviews in the morning, now I am felling so hungry and it’s not even time to have a cup of coffee yet! That platter fed not one but three people.  Unbelievable!  Pig on the spit, chips and a salad.  It was absolutely delicious and now just thinking of what I am probably going to eat for lunch today has me rethinking about waiting for Friday to go back to Chez Zandi.  I actually thought we would need another platter but we were all full by the time we were done.  The food was reasonably priced, fresh and finger licking good!

See how happy I get when I see food 🙂

After one too many I had to use the powder room.  This is one of the areas I am really sensitive about when I go out because it determines whether I will come back or not.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The bathroom was clean; tissue was available, there was hand soap, hand lotion, air freshener and the mirror was intact.  The whole time I went to use the bathroom it was clean and that was A LOT of times, trust me.  I don’t know why I pee so much when I drink and once I start I don’t stop! That said, there was a time I got to the bathroom and it was packed.  There were 5 women ahead of me and I was convinced I was going to pop.  I went to check out the men’s bathroom and there was absolutely noone so you know I did what you are thinking right now, I had no choice, I was seriously going to burst!  That’s another area to look into, maybe have two bathrooms for the women?  It will save a lot of jumping up and down trying to stop ourselves from peeing on ourselves.

Will I recommend this place to anyone?  HECK  YES!  This time around I will bring all the friends I made from the Road Trip to Sanganai Creek because they are an amazing bunch and we will certainly have a great time here.  I will rate Chez Zandi a cool 8/10 my experience here was lovely.

I got home sometime before 0100hrs, see how this is THE place to go on a Friday night?

Oh, I took a picture of the menu for those who might want to also give it a try. I will definitely go for one of their Jazz Sundays sometime soon.

What did you get up to over the weekend?  I bet your weekend was not as interesting as mine.

P.S. Why didn’t anyone tell me there was another place to hang out that is NOT Centurion I am enough of that place!

The Bottom Drawer

The Bottom Drawer is a beautiful restaurant situated in Harare.

Good morning my darlings.  I hope you had a weekend that was as lovely as mine.  I have a new found hobby which is non alcohol related and I think it’s blending pretty well with my blogging.  Restaurant Reviews.  I have not being eating out as often lately but I have decided I should do it more often and get my fellow food lovers to have a go to place when they want to know where all the great food and good deals are.  So here goes…

I had to make a prior booking so that I could have a table reserved.  Thanks to Google Maps it was easy to locate the restaurant and within 5 minutes we had arrived.  As you walk in you are welcomed by plush lawns, garden chairs and a nice cool flowery breeze.  The restaurant is a double storey house that they turned into an eat out place.

We got to The Bottom Drawer an hour later than our reserved time but thankfully our table was still available.  Unfortunately there was no one to welcome us so we had to navigate our way around the place.  Once we decided on a table which was close to the swimming pool, obviously!  We sat down and I was happy to note that they had the menu already available by the table.

A waitress came through to take our orders and I was dying for a hot beverage and ordered a cappuccino.  It was served in just under 10 minutes and yes I was watching the time just for interests sake.

The Bottom Drawer menu had a variety of what sounded like light meals and my agenda was to eat something filling so I asked the waitress to recommend something she thought we might like.  She suggested we try the pies and I was not convinced one bit because when I read “Chicken & Mushroom pie” in my head I pictured the pies and Bakers Inn or Pick n Pay and I was not about to sit down and eat that on a lunch do!  She insisted we try it and so we ordered away and waited.

If you read my restaurant review blogs you will know that I am very particular about colours in my plate.  They outdid themselves on this presentation and I promise you whatever the name of the salad dressing they use, I HAVE TO HAVE IT!  The salad was divine!  I am convinced they grow these greens themselves because they were really fresh. The pie; the pie was out of this world.  It wasn’t the one you find in the supermarket.  This one was freshly baked and the chicken and mushroom was cooked to perfection.  I don’t remember the last time I had an eat out meal that left me completely stuffed in a good way.  When you see the little bowl they put the meat in you think that looks tiny I can finish it in a few mouthfuls, do not be deceived, you won’t finish it!

I am actually feeling hungry all over again just looking at the photos I am uploading.  I have no idea why I didn’t ask for a doggy bag because I left a lot of chicken and mushroom in that bowl, it could have made a delicious left over meal.

I have to give it to The Bottom Drawer, they know their stuff!  The food was delicious, the service was efficient, the waitress was friendly, next time I go I should be sure to get her name, it was real value for your money for a cool $13 a plate.  You know I am always complaining about how I feel shortchanged after an eat out experience, well this one was worth every dollar.  I think News Cafe Fife Avenue should take notes and learn a thing or two from them.  I am still not over the experience I had there.

That said; I would recommend anyone to give The Bottom Drawer a try I promise you won’t regret it.  Take your friend, family, lover(s) and you will enjoy every moment of it.  If you take your kids there is a play area and a whole garden to explore.  The restaurant has this homey atmosphere that will definitely have you wanting to go back for another experience.

News Cafe Fife Avenue

News Cafe Five Avenue; when I go there for drinks I have a ball of a time no complaints there.  However, yesterday we went there for coffee but got a seriously raw deal.  They didn’t have cake, how can you not have cake in this blistering cold?!  They do realise that coffee dates will be on a double because of the weather right?  Anyways, I settled for some Hot Chocolate which was absolutely divine!  I had to choose something else to eat seeing that they didn’t have cake! (Note to Restaurant owners, It would be really nice if we could just walk in and actually get to eat what we actually want to eat and not have to make alternative meal choices!)  I chose something not too heavy and opted for Creamy Chicken Mini Pita Pockets served with chips.  My imagination was running wild trying to think what my plate would look like once it was placed on my table because this is something I had not had before.  Lo and behold!

This is what you get for $8

That is one very sad looking plate right there!!  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  I was like are these News Cafe Five Avenue guys for real?  It felt like I was reliving my DV8 Restaurant experience!  Come on people, you can do better than this.  How do you just place food on a plate with zero creativity.  This plate was very unhappy; there was no life, no colour, just starch.  These people really make you feel like you are eating this food for free.  After paying your United States Dollars that are so hard to come by they serve you this?!  I want to be happy to be eating out, I want to be like wow, that was something I can never eat from home.  If they gave me the recipe to whatever this was supposed to be trust me I would ace it and I would be so proud to serve it to all my friends.  Actually, tell you what, I shall look for this recipe and try it out just to show how serious I am.

I had to search on Google just to make sure I wasn’t being petty and look at what I found.  Below is a very happy looking Chicken Pita and I would rather eat that with a huge smile on my face than what I had to stomach last night!

This Google image is bursting with colour, texter and flavour!!

I hope they do something about their plating.  News Cafe Fife Avenue is a really fun hangout and I would like to continue going there.  At this rate I might just go for drinks only because the food they served me last night was a complete let down.

My rating 5/10 the Hot Chocolate won me over as well as the ambiance but the food is a no for me!

Victoria 22 Restaurant

Victoria 22 is a breath of fresh air.  How I wish it could be my birthday all over again!   I had no clue where we were going to have my birthday celebrations, all Mr D instructed to do was to doll up.

Why didn’t anyone tell me how plush Victoria 22 Restaurant is?  It’s absolutely gorgeous. If you have read some of my Restaurant Reviews you know that I am really honest about my experiences and do not leave a stone un-turned.

The staff are friendly and very welcoming.  They give you that “feel at home feeling” the moment they greet you at the entrance.

Given the current weather setup in Harare I was happy to note that they had their heating system sorted out.  I am still trying to figure out the name but it’s there in the picture below so if you know it please educate a sister. Colleen came to my rescue, she says they are called Patio Heaters, see you learn something new everyday.  Our table was outside so we got to see part of the beautifully lit garden and swimming pool (remind me to take my bathing suit next time).

They didn’t have red wine so I opted for dry white wine.  It was actually okaish but I won’t be trying it again anytime soon.  We were served with who knows what, all I recognised in there was the carrots. LOL. All the same it was delicious and it made a great combination with the wine.

They really go all out when it comes to sprucing up the place.  All the candle stands, lamps, comfortable chairs, interior decor, the powder room, absolutely amazing!  Did I tell you the powder room is so clean you can actually eat from in there?  I don’t remember the last time I dined out and I was okay with that department.

The menu was completely foreign to me.  I couldn’t even pronounce half if not all the things on it.  This is a sign that I need to dine out more because clearly I need to just waltz in a restaurant and know exactly what I want; but then again where is the fun in that?  We all need new experiences right?  The waiter came through and told us about the specials for day.  From the soups, to the starters to the main course and desserts.  He also told us what was not available for the day.  I found that very useful because it at least makes it easier for you to navigate through the menu knowing what is and isn’t there.  We didn’t opt for all those though because we just wanted to get to the main meal.  I know myself too well, if I go on to have a three course meal chances are by the time I get to my main meal I will be too full to actually enjoy it so we plunged straight in.

I chose Maiale allo Lenzero e Vino Porto.  (Pork Fillet wrapped in Bacon Sauteed in Ginger, Garlic, Sweet Chilli Soya Sauce complimented with a Port Wine Reduction served on a Bed of Parmesan Cheese Parsley Mashed Potatoes).  WHAT A MOUTHFUL!  A mouth watering mouthful too because I enjoyed every bite of it.  The portion looked small but I was actually surprised that I couldn’t finish all of it.  I guess my eyes were way bigger than my stomach after all.  I wanted to to have dessert but there is always next time because I was going to end up throwing up if I had anymore food.

The one thing that was really outstanding for me was that we didn’t have to wait forever and a day to be served, the food was prepared in just under 30 minutes.  Also…the waiters kept refilling my wine glass and serving us with olive bread slices, cheese bread slices of sorts so that kept us distracted and that’s actually very clever of them.

To sum it all up, Victoria 22 is a beautiful place. I would recommend anyone to go there especially on their birthday, you won’t be disappointed.
