Hairstyles That Make My Hair Happy

My love affair with braids started exactly a year ago when a friend referred me to her hairdresser, Christine.  Ever since then I’ve had no one else touch my hair when it comes to braiding.  There are thousands of people who can braid your hair but I keep going back to the same person because:

  • Whichever hairdo you show her you want if she can do it she’ll tell you she can and if she can’t she’s honest with you from the get go.
  • She keeps time.  If you set up an appointment with her best believe she will be there at the agreed time.
  • She’s almost always fully booked so you have to make an appointment in advance, sometimes a whole week in advance.  It will be worth the wait because your hair will look good and all her attention will be on you on the day.
  • She does home visits.
  • Her prices are very reasonable.
  • She can do your hair while you sleep.  She actually prefers that you sleep and she gets on with her work with peace, quiet and maximum concentration!

You know I love all things beautiful and when I say something is good it really is good.  If you would like her contact details please get in touch with me and I will pass it on to you.  I’ve referred a handful of people to her and they too have nothing but amazing things to say about her work.

Give her a try, you won’t be disappointed!

The Life Colour Run

The number 1 reason I’m going to attend this colour run is because it’s in my neighbourhood and I have zero excuses not to show up!  I’m going to register for the 5K run because February is my month of 5K runs besides, the uphills in Hatfield can kill someone so I’m not taking any chances thanks.

Day 10: If You Come To Harare You Are Going For A Run!

This challenge is taking our creative juices to the very next level.  Each day we have to come up with different content for our blogs and I can safely say I am out of all the flowery language that I can possibly think of!  BUT I live for challenges and I will sail through this like it’s nothing.  Today on the challenge we are sharing the ONE thing that you should do when you visit my city and naturally, I’m going to invite you to one of my favourite things to do…running.

Greenwood Park, Harare

ParkRuns have been a major part of my health and fitness journey.  I remember the first time I set foot in the park with my neighbour for my first run.  The most unpleasant experience of my life!!  However, I kept going back for more because it was a place I felt safe because there were other runners as well.  Most were slow runners, others were on a mission to sprint away but generally the atmosphere was just right if you were serious about getting in shape.  Nearly 3 years later I still put in some parkruns when I need a place to bring back fond memories of the start of my journey.  I managed to lose weight from running in the park and I also got my fitness on while I was at it!

A few weeks ago I realised that there is actually no time like the present and I should start organising our very own parkruns in Harare!  This is how it’s going to work.

part of team Fitness In The Park

The goal is to meet up for parkruns once every week on Saturday morning.

I have already started hosting Harare ParkRuns together with Steward Health and each week we are running 3K.  We will gradually increase the distance over the next few weeks until we get to the ideal 5K distance.  Everyone is invited to come along for the parkruns; young, old, kids, as long as you have a goal to have a healthy body and mind then you must make sure you come through.

ParkRun Perks:

  1. The park runs are free!
  2. I will teach you how to run and share fitness related information.
  3. You will be able to lose weight or maintain it.
  4. You will make friends with similar interests.
  5. If you can’t run walking is still an option so please don’t feel excluded.
  6. Exercise is a stress buster.
  7. You will challenge yourself to commit to a habit that your body and mind will thank you for in the not so distant future.

Fitness Bae works towards enhancing the lives of the community through support, encouragement, mental and physical health awareness activities.

I find pleasure in helping those around me achieve their health and fitness goals.  For this reason I have decided to start hosting parkruns starting from the 2nd of September 2017 going forward.

Thank You

Thank you; I have never taken time to say this but today I want everyone who has been a part of my journey to know that I am eternally grateful for their support.  My purpose would have gone unnoticed if I didn’t get a push.  I remember the first message I got from Tichaona asking me if I had found a way to monetise my passion.  I was clueless as to where to even begin but he encouraged me to work with the one idea that seemed easiest to follow through and I did exactly that!  The universe has a way of directing the right energy towards you just when you need it because a few weeks after Tichaona reached out to me a lot of other people did the same and they have not stopped surprising me.

I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the following people.  I would like to say thank you to:

Kudzai : For Audio Books.  My life has taken a very productive turn ever since you introduced me to them.  A week can not go by without me taking in a dose of them.  Thank you for always being a message away, for the fresh ideas, for pushing me even when all I want to do is give up and for being my biggest cheer leader.

Tichaona: For reaching out to me, I would have never thought outside the box if it wasn’t for you.

Tanya: For the positive talk.  Thank you for reminding me each and everyday how important it is to reach for the stars.  To go for the things that bring me happiness with all I have.  To put myself first and not compromise on what I am worth.  She is my personal Finance Manager, where money is concerned she is the one who makes sure I get a good deal.

Onai: For believing in my dream.  Whenever there is a Fitness In The Park event you are there and you bring friends with you.  Growing the team one event at a time.

Dumisani: For standing in for me on days life overwhelms me.  Thank you for the days you can get the team together for basketball games, for co-hosting Fitness In The Park events, for being the biggest motivation in the group and for being my Instagram Content Manager.  I know I can be pretty picky but you are patient and do it all the same.

Colleen: I would actually need an entire blog post to say my thank yous because you have helped me through so many different areas of my life. However, today I want to say thank you for all the brilliant blog ideas not only for the fitness blog but for my lifestyle blog as well.  Thank you for reminding me that blogging is not just a hobby but an art that people need to start respecting.  Thank you for always directing me to useful reading material and thank you for believing in me.

Sir Nigel : Thank you for sharing my blog content on your ever growing #263chat community.  You have no idea how this had me taking a step back to decide on what I should be writing. If 74 000+ people are going to see my work it better be some quality blog post!  Thank you for this, my fitness blog will certainly go far.

Tillo: Thank you for always having my back.  You are the one person who has known me the longest.  You give me strength when I need it the most. Thank you for showing me that once you get to that happy place nothing can stop you from growing.  Thank you for always sharing my work on all your social media platforms, sometimes all my blog link needs is a retweet that will reach hundreds of other people.

Wesley: This is the man who is responsible for my logo.  I remember he asked me what I would like it to look like and after sending him a short message he sent me my logo and I fell in love with it on the spot.  Thank you for making my ideas more visual.  Thank you for being ever so patient with me when I send you requests.  Thank you for the beautiful apparel you make for my brand.  Thank you for being such a professional Graphic Designer.

I may have left out a lot of people in this blog post but please know that I appreciate every single one of you.  You expect nothing in return but still help me all the same, I hope that one day I will be able to return the favour.  I am surrounded by people who are dependable and who bursting with positive energy.  I wish you well and I hope you never forget that you have played a huge part in what is now a fitness brand.

Words are not enough to thank you for everything you continue to do for me.

Hello June, I’m Still Slaying!

Today I feel so good I have nothing but feel good hormones rushing through my veins!  Each year since 2015 I weigh myself on the 1st of June just to see if my weight has made any drastic change over the year.  I can safely say that in 3 straight years I have managed to maintain the same weight range.  Amazing how I am the exact same weight I was a year ago…

S/O to Sammy for the beautiful poster 🙂

This year I have a plan for winter and I came up with a Winter Challenge that will be sure to keep the weight off.  Everyone is invited to take part it will be a lot of fun and you don’t want to miss out on this.  Today I took a before picture to use against my after picture once the 60 Day Challenge is complete.  I can’t believe my abs are disappearing before my eyes, I blame the white wine!  You can read the post I wrote last year same time below and get to see how far I have come on my health and fitness journey.  Those taking part in the challenge, good luck, it is NOT going to be easy.

Winter is NOT my friend, look at that pouch 😦

Hello and good morning.  It’s a beautiful Wednesday and today I got off the scale with a huge smile on my face.  Can you believe that I have managed to maintain the same weight range in the space of a year.  I was actually surprised myself because given that I haven’t been running as often as I used to I would have thought I would have gained weight.  After posting this question on Twitter

experts have to help me with this one. I’m losing weight each week but I don’t run as much as I used to. What am I doing right?

Myk replied and said ” @MaKupsy running on a regular basis can temporarily increase your metabolism , which burns calories for energy. You’re still reaping the benefits”.

June 2016

That said, it’s winter this part of the world and getting up in the morning to go for my run is becoming a lot harder.  I have been setting my alarm for 5:15am for the past two weeks and I have lounged in bed for an extra 15 minutes and then sometimes I have even decided to not go running at all because my bed will be warm and comfortable.

However, this week I have come up with a new strategy.  Instead of torturing myself by waking up early and actually not clocking in any runs I now just wake up when my internal cooperates.  Say today for example; I woke up at 6:15am.  I didn’t have time to even think about whether I felt like running or not.  I jumped out of bed, wore my running gear and left the house in a flash because time was not on my side but my run still had to be completed.  See, I can safely say that in winter I can work best under pressure because this alarm thing is certainly not working out.

I am also watching what I eat.  Thanks to this miserable weather I am feeling hungry most times and I told myself that if I don’t eat right and mind my portions I might end up gaining all the weight I have worked so hard on losing.  I am having fruits, vegetables, meat (minus beef I am not a fan of it AT ALL) extra small starch portions and drinking room temperature water because I simply can’t stomach cold water right now!

If you’re a runner what winter tips and tricks do you have that you have tried and tested?

Fitness In The Park : Africa Day

There is one main thing you can do when you have a break from work and that is rest.  I know a lot of people managed to do that yesterday but for some of us who can never get enough of exercise it was a chance to meet up with like minded people and get some activities going.  The start time was 9:00 am and that gave everyone enough time to get ready and possibly add an extra hour of sleep.  I had done an 8K run before the event so there was no way I was going to go for a run so instead I watched over our bags while everyone went for a short 2K run.

The agenda for the day was to complete the entire alphabet as a group for the Spell Your Name Challenge.  We really should have had someone take a video of this because the various forms people ended up doing were hilarious.  It looks easy to do on paper but a different story when you actually have to do it.  That’s the beauty of doing things in a group, you get to learn and unlearn things.  I for one learnt that you can combine your burpees with mountain climbers and feel like death after wards (in a good way).

cd58939d-e3f5-4a7f-80c6-4bc8340e82e9.jpg

Onai showing us how to do a star jump

We ended up substituting burpees with skipping and speed runs because we were no longer doing them in the proper form.  It was a lot of fun either way because we got to challenge our bodies in ways we never knew were possible.

I would like to personally thank everyone who came through yesterday:

  • Onai : May I one day be able to do star jumps like that without wanting to pass out.
  • Thembi : Even though the challenge was not easy you kept your good form for all the workouts.
  •  Jeff : Who knew you could combine burpees with mountain climbers, shout out to you for teaching us this trick!
  • Archie : You had a cold but that did not stop you from coming through for the event ; you even added dabbing to the regular jumping jacks and played basketball after the main agenda of the day.
  • Samantha : The energy you have is out of this world, you should seriously consider being a sprinter.
  • Kundi : You managed to run even though it is not your favourite form of exercise.
  • Dumi : You arrived a little later than everyone else but you managed to join us and still play basketball afterwards.
  • Memory : That push up variation was not something we expected after an hour of exercise but we loved it all the same.  You still went on to play for your team at your netball match.
  • Chenge : Girl those squat pulses you taught us are definitely going on my to-do-list.  I hope this means my tush will grow at a faster rate because they are definitely something.

It was a great day filled with great vibes.  The beautiful thing about this experience is that the ones who love fitness will stay coming through without need for a push.  I can only write about fitness and tell you all about it but if you actually don’t get up and do the work you will never get results.  At the end of the day this is all on you.

This Fitness In The Park event is free and happens once each month.  Be sure to Like my Facebook Page to stay up to date with all things fitness related.

Fitness In The Park

Fitness In The Park brought to you by Fitness Bae!

Let’s be honest, gym membership is expensive.  With subscriptions ranging from $50 to $150 per month it’s no wonder most people don’t hit the gym. I mean, how many of us can afford those prices, definitely not me!  If you have been following my health and fitness journey on social media you will already know that I managed to lose 10kgs in a year through eating right and without attending a single gym session.  This is what this meet up in the park is going to be all about, helping you achieve your fitness goals without breaking a budget.

The event is open to everyone and I am encouraging you to come through no matter your fitness levels.  Remember we are always learning new things everyday and this will be a platform to share experiences and map a way forward for your fitness journey.

For more information on the event you can call or WhatsApp the numbers on the flyer.  You can also check out my Fitness Blog for different articles on health and fitness over here.  Alternatively you can Like my Facebook page to join a team that is seriously enthusiastic about fitness.
