10K Goal Complete!

It’s a beautiful Thursday morning.  I woke up today and told myself that I was going to run 8K and make my way back home.  This was my first run of the week.  From Monday till Wednesday I had been concentrating on indoor workouts which comprised of Zumba, Metabolic workout and an everyday challenge that focuses on getting toned abs.  I think this actually contributed to my endurance levels this morning.

My first 10K run was in March 2015 which is one year ago.  You can see the distance and pace in the image below.

It took me a whole 1 hr 16 mins to complete it and I remember telling myself that I would work on running 10K in under an hour.  Back then I thought I was being insane given that I had only started running for few months but by now my readers already know I am seriously dedicated to my running goals and once I put it out there especially on Twitter or on my blog the pressure to actually live up to my word is real!

And so today instead of the intial 8K I decided why not just add 2K and see if I can actually make it happen.  Guess what?  I did it!!  However the run had a couple of uphills and that slowed down my pace a bit but it’s okay because as long as I kept telling myself I couldn’t afford to run 6 mins per km AT ALL!

Screenshot_2016-03-31-06-37-20.pngFrom a pace of 7″14/km to running at 5″50/km I must say that is the most impressive throw back I have ever witnessed in my life!  This just shows that consistency is key.  If I had decided to stop this running addiction of mine I would have probably never managed to complete a personal goal.  When it comes to running I make no excuses, I go out there and run the distance, work on the pace, burn the calories and above all else make sure I get some rest days because those too are important as the exercise itself.

If you are just starting out on your running journey just know that anything is impossible and only YOU can make it happen if you just stay #AddictedToFitness

Have a lovely day ahead.  I am off to have fruit and lots of water, I need to eat something before hunger strikes!

Meet Fortunate Molai

What is your full name?

Fortunate Molai

How old are you?

What are your hobbies and interests?

I LOVE reading; mainly fiction but I am now expanding my interests. I also like watching movies and I think I go to the cinema once a month alone or with company. I love braaing, taking walks, researching on things I plan on doing and I like travelling.

What did you study?

I studied Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) for my undergrad and Supply Chain Management for my Honours. I am currently studying for (MCIPS) Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply and I am on the last stage.

What are top 3 skills for Procurement Officer?

This differs from industry to industry as well as from company to company but from my own experiences here are the top three:

  • Negotiation skills
  • Contract management
  • Category management

What is a typical career path in this job function?

Well it could start from being a graduate trainee, assistant procurement officer, procurement officer, procurement manager. This is the best you can go if the company does procurement just as an administrative function. For companies that view procurement as a strategic function it will actually be under a department called Supply Chain. In this regard there are so many paths which include relationship management, contract management, logistics and category management to name a few.

What do you wear to work and what inspires your look?

I wear slacks mainly and maybe once or twice a week I wear a dress. Mmmmm I like clothes I feel good in and that look good on me. My look is made up of different sources. I can see something online, whilst watching a movie or series or someone I bump into. I don’t necessarily take notes but it’s something I take note of and I blend it with my own style.

Where would you like to be in your career five years from now?

God willing if what I am planning pans out, I would want to be a procurement manager in an industry that has a supply chain department.

What is the highest-level job one can hold in this career?

Supply Chain Director and you can also get a board seat.

Tell me about your work experience? How has it prepared you for Procurement Officer job?

It has been varied I have worked in four different sectors and from each experience I learn something new. I started working as a warehouse intern straight out of varsity; this company had a supply chain department instead of just procurement. Warehousing is closely tied with logistics and it was quite overwhelming but it provided valuable experience. After that I was a procurement graduate trainee and it was quite DIFFERENT from the internship job. Unfortunately I didn’t like this job because it was repetitive, routine and monotonous. On the other hand, this is where I learnt and applied my negotiation skills, budget skills, relationship management. I moved from “branch to branch” and even though the processes were the same there was something different about each place I went to. Whatever situation I find myself in I always look at what I can learn from it and how I can improve myself from that situation. So I learnt as much as I could. Each job I have had has moulded me and shaped me into the person I am now. With procurement you need patience and being quick on your feet. You also have to quickly adapt because it’s so dynamic. All these experiences have helped me observe patterns, avoid pitfalls and draw conclusions on the behavioural patterns of certain industries.

What advise would you give someone who wants to be a Procurement Officer?

You have to have a passion for it or else it will drive you crazy. Also be prepared to be lied to, let down and left in a lurch and know that it’s nothing personal. You also get blamed for things you didn’t even know happened LOL like you are getting to the office at 8am and you have people waiting for you waiting to have your head. That’s the “emotional” side of it since emotional intelligence is now a requirement in the workplace. You have to keep your cool always and avoid blowing things out of proportion.

Procurement spends a lot of money so there is quite a lot of filing you have to do, soft and hard copy. Monthly reports are order of the day. Adhering to the procurement guidelines because this is delicate area and if handled improperly it can land you in jail, worst case scenario or you lose your job. Do not accept bribes. Keep relationships with key stakeholders in a good state because they will back you up when your back is against the wall. It’s fun sometimes I enjoy it when I go for site visits. I am sure there is more but this is all I have.

Did you always want to work in this field of work if yes why?

NOOOOO. I didn’t know about Supply Chain Management until I was in my second year. My then operations management lecturer has such a passion for this field that when he presented it I was hooked. After the first lecture I went online to research on it and from then….well the rest is history and I don’t regret it.

What are the words you live by?

I have lots of favourites. I will give you 5 including bible verses.

  • Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
  • The most important thing in life will always be family.
  • You can’t live your life for other people. You’ve got to do what’s right for you, even if it hurts some people you love.
  • For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Many thanks to Fortunate for taking time out to do this interview with me.  Have a lovely working week ahead.

You can get a hold of her on:

P.S I follow some focused and talented people on Twitter!

I Can’t Sleep!

This will be my second week of unhappiness in the sleep department.  I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep and it is starting to affect me in a very bad way.  Last night I went to bed at 7pm thanks to an excruciating headache that felt like it was going to pop my eyes right out!  I later woke up around 11pm and couldn’t sleep properly and ended up killing time on TwitterYou would think all the running and exercising I do would at least make me tired enough to pass out like it used to but no, even the evening run I did last night didn’t help matters.

The thing is I am going through something.  I am feeling things that are feeding on my feel good hormones but unfortunately right now I can’t talk about it.  The only thing I can do is find a way to deal with it.  Some days I really wish we had shrinks in this country. (Maybe we do and I’m not aware of them?)  You would just call them up, make an appointment and just let out all your thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged or ridiculed.

I miss waking up with extra energy and enthusiasm.  I actually miss just going to bed and actually getting to sleep through the night.

I am feeling so unhappy.

Run Everyday Challenge

Hello, good morning.  It’s a lovely Monday morning and I can’t wait to face the running week ahead.  I know I sound all bubbly today, it’s the feel good hormones running through my veins and I can only thank my morning run for it.  Today I left the house with running for a solid hour in mind and guess what that yielded?  A run that totaled up to 10K and I am super proud of myself because I beat my last 10K record which I completed in 1 hour 8 minutes.

Sometime last year we tried out a Run Everyday Challenge and it was the toughest experience I ever went through.  To make it worse, it was in winter and you know how your body and the bed are serious best friends in winter.  I did the challenge with my running partner and friend Tariro.  This year I decided instead of just the two of us why not add more people to the challenge, the more the merrier right?  I took the news to Twitter and a couple of people decided they would like to take part.  I created a WhatsApp group (I hate those by the way) for the week that way I can track the progress for everyone.

The participants are as follows:

Name Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
Zvie 10.13K  7.11K  6.45K  9.33K  5.5K  4.46K  8.50K
Tari 4.04K  6.06K  5K  4.71K  5.51K  7.30K  4.04K
Kennedy 8.1K  7.3K  9K  8K  6.2K  5.10K  5.20K
Sheryl 5.15K  7.09K  4.22K  9.03K  6.01K  5.11K
Carlos  8.3K  12K  7.07K  4.13K
Chisepo  6K  10.02K  9.07K  10.20K  11.04K
Gerald  6.4K  5.10K  7.39K  6.28K
Garnet 1.07K  4.59K  5.10K  5.52K
Kennie  1.64K  2.58K  6.74K  10.66K  15.06K
Itso 5.04K  6.18K  7.61K  10.08K  14.20K  7.04K  21.21K
Patience 5.03K  6.03K  4.81K  8.04K
Rodney  5.01K  4.01K  4.31K  8.03K
Danai 9.02K 5.83K  5.31K  5.02K

The rules of the Run Everyday Challenge are as follows:

  • Minimum running distance 4K.
  • There will be no repeat runs, once you run a certain distance that’s it.  For example; if you run 4K today you are not allowed to run 4K again during the course of the challenge.Minimum running distance 4K.
  • You have to screenshot your run every day so that it is recorded on the runners list.

I wish the team all the best.  This is going to be a very tough week because come rain or shine we are going to go out and run!

If you want to take part in the challenge just tag your runs with #RunWithFitnessBae and I will also add you to the group.

A few updates on the days will be posted as the challenge goes.

images (2)

Day 1: Some members of the group didn’t run the distance stated in the rules.  I informed everyone that whoever didn’t subscribe to the rules was free to exit the group.  This is a challenge people not a run whatever you feel like.  Get fit or get out!  Let’s hope day 2 will have people getting on track otherwise they will be disqualified.

Day 2Kennedy has the fastest pace in the group going at 4″34 per km!!!  He is high on something if you ask me.  This morning Carlos took up the challenge to match or beat Kennedy’s pace.  Watch this space for a winner.

Day 3: WAKING UP THIS MORNING WAS HARD!!  I slept late and when I woke up this morning I was this close to quitting but I remembered that I initiated the challenge so giving up now would be such a let down so I soldiered on and did my run for the day.  A few participants are suffering from injuries.  Patience sprained her hip joint yesterday morning during her run so she was unable to run today.  Gerald had the runs but managed to do his evening run yesterday.  I checked up on him this morning and it seems “the runs ain’t loyal” but I do wish him a speedy recovery.  He will be pretty annoyed when he reads that I posted this but I am just being a good reporter.  Tari sprained her ankle and being the go getter that she is she managed to run all the way.  We recommended that she get some heat rub and stretch her sprained ankle and hopefully tomorrow she will be as good as new.

Remember yesterday’s Pace Challenge?  Carlos won it with a ground breaking pace of 4″36!!!!  CONGRATULATIONS MAN!  All the best next time Kennedy I guess now you have to “Stay in your lane.”

Day 4: A big well done to Sheryl not only did she clock in her most running distance today, she also entered a new running level on NikePlus.  She has now entered the Green Level.  I am super proud of her.  The challenge is doing everyone some good because the participants are clearly taking themselves to the next level of fitness.  Incase you are wondering what the NikePlus levels are:

Nike+ Levels are assigned to the following kilometer-based achievements:

  • Yellow: 0-49 kilometers or 0-30 miles
  • Orange: 50-249 kilometers or 31-154 miles
  • Green: 250-999 kilometers or 155-620 miles
  • Blue: 1,000-2,499 kilometers or 621-1,552 miles
  • Purple: 2,500-4,999kilometers or 1,553-3,106 miles
  • Black: 5,000-14,999 kilometers or 3,107-9,319 miles
  • Volt: More than 15,000 kilometers or 9,320 miles

We have since concluded that the Morning Runners are in beast mode!  Most of them are the pace and distance setters!

Danayi was a little late for the party and that’s why her runs start reflecting on Day 3.  But the more the merrier right, we need all the motivation we can get to reach our final destination.

I am super proud of the team because EVERYONE ran today, no excuses at all.  Well done team!

Day 5:  We are near but yet so far… Just two more days to go, I have never in my life looked forward to Sunday the way I do right about now.  Rodney shared some interesting information on the group today.

Guys, during my run yesterday. I met a 70(!!) year old marathon runner. He’s been in the comrades 18 times and started running in 1980. I was like 😰. When I started talking to him, he was half way into a 30km run. Anyway, you know how old people are like. He gave me some words of wisdom (which i wont necessarily follow). He says the trick to his running is never stopping. Run 5 days a week and DONT STOP. The other things was he drinks a concotion of 500ml water, 6 table spoons of lemon juice, 4 tables spoons of sugar and one tea spoon of salt. before and after every run. for energy and recovery. Who wants to try it?

No one has volunteered to try out the advice he shared so let’s wait and see how the day goes.  The morning runners have been outdone by Itso who ran 14.20K this morning, WOW!!!  I wonder what he is on, whatever it is I want in on it!!

It was an epic running week!  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine myself running 50K in a week.  I guess it just goes to show that anything is indeed possible.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who took part in the challenge.  We kept each other going throughout the week.  It was a fun group and even though one individual decided to drop out that didn’t stop the team from continuing with the challenge.  I can’t wait for the next challenge.  Maybe this time I will make it a pace challenge…Now that will be something!

Gossip Is So Tasty, How We Love To Swallow It

That’s one of my favourite Bible verses Proverbs 26 v 22.

I am guilty of gossiping every now and again.  I must admit that it is a terrible habit and that is why I try as much as I can to stay away from it.  You see the thing with gossip is that half the time you talk about things that you don’t have full evidence of.  You just go on and talk about things that are usually very damaging to the next person’s character without a care in the world.

I read this on Twitter a few minutes ago and one of the people I follow Tweeted this:

Dear oomf (one of my followers), 11 years running and am glad you’re still a hoe. Yours oomf.

Please note that I am not attacking my follower but his Tweet inspired me to blog today.

How many times have you heard people say negative things about someone?  Trust me, I do all the time.  I have since come to ask interesting questions when faced with negative talk.  Let’s use the Tweet above as an example.

I would have ideally asked him these few questions to get to the bottom of his allegations.

  • How do you know that this woman is of questionable morals?
  • Have you actually seen her in the act(s)?
  • Why are you even counting the number of years she has been at it?
  • What concern is it to you that she is getting up to whatever she is getting up to?
  • Why are you acting like her behaviour will affect your life in any way?
  • Even if you do have all the evidence in the world what does saying such things about someone else say about you as an individual?

It just puzzles me how men feel the need to police women’s privates.  Whatever she decides to do with her body is completely up to her.  No amount of gossiping about her will change anything either.

I will leave it here for today.

Hello – Adele

Adele has done it again!  She has released a song and music video that I have watched close to 15 times already this morning and I keep getting goosebumps.   Talented does not even begin to describe Adele!  Do you have any idea how many times I have been listening to her last album Adele 21 and hoping and wishing she would drop a new album soon?  I read online that she confirmed her brand new album is called ’25’ and that it’s dropping on 20 NOVEMBER 2015 people, mark your calender’s people because I just did so this end.

I am so glad she is back and she is back with a bang.  You would think her being away would change things, trust me she has changed to greater heights if you ask me.  Thanks to Twitter almost everyone that I follow has been tweeting about it and there is no way such great news would miss a music lover.

Here are part of the lyrics to her new song, you can get the rest of the lyrics from http://lirik90.blogspot.com/

Hello, it’s me
I was wondering if after all these years
You’d like to meet, to go over
They say that time’s supposed to heal ya
But I ain’t done much healing
Hello, can you hear me?
I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be
When we were younger and free
I’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet
There’s such a difference between us
And a million miles
Hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times to tell you
I’m sorry, for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you
I’m sorry, for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore
After I listened to this track a lot of things went through my head, especially all the wrongs I did to one guy that I dated.  A part of me really wanted to blog about him and write a letter of apology but NO I will not partake in that, he is in the past, buried away in time and I would like to keep it that way.  I have fought the feeling of not writing about him this whole time I have been blogging and I won’t let this very sad song break my promise.
Okay so I really tried to fight the feeling but I ended up calling that ex all the way in Namibia and my Tweind Fortune describes the feeling I gave in to as the “Adele Effect” and one must never underestimate it!
It’s really easy to write about when people do you wrong but you have no idea how hard it is to write a blog that will reveal just how much you broke someone else’s heart…
Are you an Adele fan?  If yes, how do you rate her new song on a scale of 0-10?

Day 8 – Water Is My Friend

20150908_142651If you follow me on Twitter you will know that I take my water drinking very seriously.  I keep a water bottle and a tumbler right on my desk so that I can save myself the kitchen trips.  The moment I get to work in the morning I fill up both containers so that I know my morning is set.  Here is a breakdown of how I spread out the amount of water I drink in a day.

1 glass = 500 ml

  • After my morning run, depending on far I would have gone I drink between 500ml – 1 litre afterwards.
  • When I get to work I have a glass of water that I either sip on or gulp down depending on how I am feeling that morning.
  • At midday I have another glass just to make sure I can stop the hunger pangs just before having my lunch.
  • At around 3 pm I have another glass, this glass is just because I am used to always drinking water so most times I skip it.
  • The moment I get home after work I have a glass of water.
  • My last glass of water is usually an hour after supper because if I get carried away and have a glass before I sleep I have the worst night because I keep waking up for pee breaks.
  • So I drink anything between 2 to 2.5 litres of water in a day and at most 3 litres.

I am one of those people who are not affected by how tasteless water is.  I actually like drinking my water at room temperature.  It’s only after my runs that I have ice cold water.  The whole add lemon, cucumber or whatever else people add to their water to give it “taste” does not work for me.  I enjoy it as is.  All this water intake never gives me a chance to actually feel thirsty which is a very good thing.

You can find out how much water you are recommended to drink from here apparently it’s different for everyone because we all come in different sizes.  So just because your friend is drinking 3 litres a day does not automatically qualify you to be doing the same.

RANDOM WATER FACT: The weight a person loses directly after intense physical activity is weight from water, not fat.

Day 4 – My Hair Game Is Non-Existent

I used to be a huge fan of human hair extensions.  The only difference was that I used to get the synthetic hair and that was okay until it started doing serious injustice to my hairline.  The main reason I liked the extensions was because my hair doesn’t grow past a certain number of centimeters so at least with that I didn’t feel so bad after all for having not so long hair.

Eventually I chucked the synthetic hair and just round about that time that’s when the Brazilian/ Peruvian/ Virgin hair came along.  I have no idea which is which but I do know it is expensive.  I hear the minimum you can buy this hair that cascades down your back is a good $250.  Please note that these are UNITED STATES DOLLARS.  If that’s the minimum price I shudder to imagine what the maximum is!  This is the reason why my hair game will never succeed in this lifetime.  There is no way I am willing to part with that kind of money for hair alone.  Mind you, you haven’t even included money you will pay the hairdresser or whatever other chemicals or sprays that need to be used to keep the hair looking flawless.  The few women I have seen with this hair look absolutely gorgeous in it and the rest; well, I think they are either buying the imitation version of the hair or are perhaps not taking good care of it.

Chances of seeing me in this lifetime with Brazilian/ Peruvian/ Virgin hair are close to none because I simply can not afford it.  It is way out of reach for me.  If anyone ever offers to buy it for me they would be doing a huge mistake because I promise you I would sell it. (judge me all you like)  The things that I could do with $250 between me and my daughter!  I guess it’s also a growing up thing.  You accept that some things will just miss you and that’s okay, we can’t possibly have everything we want in this life.  I keep my hair short, saves me both time and money and I use the money for other constructive things and at the same time I stay very well in my financial lane.

photo credit the lovely @mtchikawa (Twitter) rocking her Brazilian 20 inch hair

For those who are rocking the human hair and doing a great job of it then well done ladies and keep doing what you’re doing!  As for those who are not, I reserve the right to remain silent.

Social Media Cleanse

I used to be all over the show where Facebook and Twitter were concerned.  I lived for social media.  When I look back I envision my social media life back then as a disorganised closet.

Twitter was my greatest enemy, I would enjoy watching the retweets and favourites go through my timeline.  I broadcast my day to day events especially about my personal life. I would get involved in online drama and would thrive on the attention I would get from it.  The people I followed didn’t even make it any easier, there was always mischief and mayhem going on there so you can only imagine the mess that used to go on there.   It just took one day from out of the blues for me to stop and ask myself if all this unnecessary attention was even worth it.  I asked myself what other people my age were doing with their time instead of spending hours on end playing online doing absolutely nothing productive.  And so I took some time out to cleanse social media from my system.

That is round about the time I decided to start blogging.  I wanted to divert my energy and time towards doing something positive.  It started off at a pace of probably a blog a week just to see how things would go and before I knew it I was going for 3 blogs a week.  This was definitely a whole lot healthier than spending close to 8 hours of my day trolling and tweeting about sex all day.

I had always planned on visiting the beach at some point in this lifetime.  I guess the social media cleanse somehow helped in getting that done.  I would like to believe it was mainly because I was not ranting and raving about it for anyone willing to listen it actually materialised and I got to visit Durban and had one heck of a great time!

I started learning how to drive at the age of 18 and can you believe I finally got my driver’s licence last year???  Talk about procrastination!!  I had to focus on finally getting my licence and getting it out of the way before the year came to an end and thankfully because I was focused and I was giving my lessons the full attention they deserved I got my licence at a second attempt at the road test.  Hurray to me!

And lastly I finally got serious about weight loss.  After I weighed myself and realised I was weighing the exact weight I was at full term when I was pregnant I got the shock of my life and started dedicating an hour to exercising each day.  I started at a light pace because I did not want to shock my body and then easily give up.  It was not easy, some days I wanted to give up but I remembered all the benefits that would come with exercising.  I created a Whatsapp group while I was at it titled #TeamFitness ,a lot of good things can come out of social media once you decide to use it wisely…

A certain ex boyfriend of mine once told me that I was fat and I used to embarrass him with my weight.  Well, look at me now? I have lost 5 kgs and I plan on losing 5 more kgs and I feel absolutely brilliant.  My confidence levels have sky rocketed and I am healthy, strong and happy.   I am actually thankful for him saying that to me because it was part of the reason I decided to push myself and live a healthy lifestyle.  I would not be this healthy and happy if I had stayed at my then weight.  At least something good came out of that “relationship”.

So you see.  That social media cleanse was just the change I needed; now my “closet” is clean and neatly packed.  I dropped using social media for the wrong reasons and now I get nothing but positive things from it.

My drive and determination has also increased.  Through exercise I have become a self motivator and I push myself even further with each workout.  The amount of drive I have for exercise is insane and I plan on practising in all the other aspects in the year 2015 and years to come.
